  • On August 29th (Monday), the more-or-less annual University of Maine Intermedia MFA program faculty show will open. Among other work, The Angel of America, a “media operetta”—in fact, a self-organizing, “exploded pop song”—conceived of and directed by N.B.Aldrich, will premier. The piece is the work of a large number of collaborators; among these, I contributed multiple clarinet and vocal tracks. The exhibition takes place at the Fernald AP/PE Space, IMRC Center, Stewart Commons, University of Maine in Orono, ME. It is open regular weekday hours (approximately 9am to 5pm) through Friday, September 16. The exhibit and all associated events are free and open to the public.
       Gallery Talk: Tuesday, September 13, 7:00 PM
  • August 7th (Sunday) 12:15 PM, I will be performing with Aldrich, Norton and Ross (with Nate Aldrich, electronics, and Leslie Ross, bassoon and electronics) as part of the Sounds Without Borders festival produced by the good folk at LAMPS, the Lubec Area Musicians’ Philanthropic Society. The festival takes place at Stockford Park in downtown Lubec, ME. Just a stone’s throw from Canada! In the event of rain, the festival will move indoors to the Lubec Brewing Company, an excellent microbrewery just a few blocks north of the park at 41 Water St. Also appearing: Id M Theft Able and Duane Ingalls in a number of different guises. The event is free and open to the public.
  • June 17 – July 30, 2022, N.B.Aldrich & I will be presenting an installation of our piece Two Rumfords at Observatory, a great new gallery in downtown Belfast, Maine.

  • Summer 2020, I will be working with N.B.Aldrich on a sound piece for the American Roundtable project, commissioned by the Architectural League NY. Our project is focused on the Rumford, Maine area. Read an article describing the project, published May 2020 in the Sun Journal, a Maine daily newspaper.
  • March 1 – May 23, 2020, the sounds of Requiem (my sound installation) will accompany the Learning from Nature: The Future of Design exhibit at MODA: the Museum of Design Atlanta. This is part of their year-long exhibition series, 2020: Year of Climate + Change which focuses on what designers are doing to combat climate change.
  • January 25th (Saturday) 7:00 PM, my recent composition, field: snowfall, February 13, will be presented as part of a film and sound screening entitled Fences / Snowfall / Elms, curated by filmmaker Matt Shaw at The Cannery. Presented sequentially are Only Fences (1940) by Milton Dowe, field: snowfall, February 13 (2019) by yours, truly and Saints of Circumstance (2019) by Matt Shaw.   • January 23th (Thursday) 7:00 PM I will be giving an artist’s presentation about my sound installation Requiem at the Fields Pond Audubon Center at 216 Fields Pond Road, Holden, ME 04429. A discussion will follow and light refreshments will be served.

  • October 28th (Monday) my sound installation field: alarum, implication, will open at the Blum Gallery at the College of the Atlantic at 105 Eden St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609. The installation runs from Monday, October 28th through Wednesday, November 13th. The gallery is open weekdays from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

  • June 15th (Saturday) 7:30 PM, I will be giving an artist presentation on Requiem, my electroacoustic composition about extinction which has been newly installed at The Cannery, along with sound installations by Luciano Chessa, Leslie Ross and Walter Wright. The Cannery is at 207 Southern Bay Rd., Penobscot, ME.
  • June 8th (Saturday) 7:30 PM, I will be performing with Walter Wright and Leslie Ross at The Cannery, 207 Southern Bay Rd., Penobscot, ME. This markes the opening of Walter’s installation, a multi-media portrait, a site-specific, quadrophonic sound and multi-channel video installation based on patterns and rhythms observed during his residency at the Cannery.
  • May 25th (Saturday) 7:30 PM, I will be performing with N.B.Aldrich and Leslie Ross at The Cannery, 207 Southern Bay Rd., Penobscot, ME. Also appearing: Michael Rosenstein who is up from Boston to do a solo set.
  • On May 17th (Friday) 5:00 PM, the annual Intermedia MFA thesis show opens. There are exhibits in the Lord Hall Gallery by this year’s four graduating students (which includes myself). My thesis project, a sound installation entitled field: alarum, implication (v.2), will be available for audition in the Fernald AP/PE Space, IMRC Center, Stewart Commons, University of Maine Orono, ME.   • April 4th (Thursday) 7:30 PM, I will be performing with N.B.Aldrich in a concert of improvised electronics, as part of the Intermedia MFA faculty show. This takes place at the AP/PE Space, IMRC Center, Stewart Commons, University of Maine Orono, ME.
  • March 16th (Saturday) 3:00 PM, I will be giving a presentation about my sound installation Requiem, which opens at that time at the Massachusetts Audubon Boston Nature Center at 500 Walk Hill Street, Mattapan, MA 02126. The installation runs from Saturday, March 16th through Saturday, March 23th. Additionally, I will be giving a brief talk to the Mass Audubon Birdathon gathering on Wednesday, March 20 at 6:00 PM and a longer one at the installation’s closing at 3:00 PM on Saturday, March 23rd.

  • January 15th (Tuesday) 9:00 PM, Michael Rosenstein and I will be performing as Senior Set, our field recording-based, electronics improvisation duo, live on the air at WCUW, 91.3 FM, on their Music Under the Moon show, hosted by Mickey O’Hara and Seamus Williams. We have the luxury of doing two long sets.

  • July 14th (Saturday) through August 8 (Wednesday), 2018, my sound installation Requiem will be available for viewing on a by-appointment basis at Spaceus @ Roslindale in the amazing Roslindale Substation, 4228 Washington St, Roslindale, MA 02131. This is part of the Spaceus residency in this awesome, neo-classical building. Please contact me or email the Spaceus folks to make an appointment.
       Spaceus is an organization that transforms empty storefronts and buildings into spaces to make art and build community. The opening of this new space takes place all day on Saturday, July 14th. Up-to-date information regarding the day’s events can be found on the Facebook event page.

  • December 14th (Thursday) 4 PM, I, along with five collaborators—collectively known as the maine temporary society for wabi sabi—will be presenting dissolution, a performative and participatory installation, in the Fernald AP/PE Space, IMRC Center, Stewart Commons, University of Maine Orono, ME. Participation will be in small groups, on a first-come-first-served basis.
  • November 30th (Thursday) 7 PM, I will be performing a duo improvisation with Michael Rosenstein at a private party in the grad space at the IMRC Center, Stewart Commons, University of Maine Orono, ME 04469-5785. Also performing: Eleanor Kipping and Kate Dawson doing Marina Abramovich’s “Living Door”; many others will be showing work as well, and it will be a nice hang. Some refreshments will be provided.        About the performance: This past year, Steve Norton and Michael Rosenstein have spent time collecting and analyzing sounds with audio microphones, electrocoil pickups, and home-built instruments: contact mics, hydrophones and photodiodes. Field trips have taken them variously to dingy basements, industrial buildings and domestic spaces, and on city walks, beach sojourns and forest explorations. As inveterate improvisers, the two will weave a spontaneous set from their sonic harvest, either used as captured or mangled, distressed and otherwise augmented.

  • November 10th (Friday) 4-10 PM, I will be installing an electronic sound piece at Gross Domestic Product, a one-evening, pop-up art show at the home of Ali Asgar. This is intended to be a ‘domestic intervention’, an artistic response to someone’s home space. In addition to my sound piece, there will be installation and performance work shown. The other artists showing are Aylah Ireland, Eleanor Kipping, Lisa Leaverton, Susan Smith and Virginia Valdes. This is happening at 1 Evergreen Drive, Orono, Maine.   • June 24th (Saturday) 3 PM, I will be performing an improvised soundscape with Nate Aldrich and Leslie Ross inside the old, civil-war era Fort Knox, at the head of Penobscot Bay in Bucksport, Maine, as part of Flow Fort Knox. This event will start at 3 pm in the afternoon and go to 11 pm, and will include a lot of artists. WE WILL BE PERFORMING AT 5 PM. Stay tuned to the Web site for other details as they develop.

    Policy & price: this event is free and open to the public. A $5-per-car parking fee helps to support the Friends of Ft. Knox, a volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation and maintenance of Ft. Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory.

  • April 14th (Friday) 7 PM, Leslie Ross (bassoon, electronics) and I will be joining the touring Bonnie Kane/Walter Wright Duo for a couple of sets of mix-n-match duos and ensemble playing at The Cannery, 207 Southern Bay Rd., Penobscot, ME. (Kane plays tenor sax, flute and electronics, and Wright plays percussion and electronics.)

  • April 8th (Saturday) 2 PM, I will be performing in the 9th Annual Back Cove Contemporary Music Festival, presented by the Portland Conservatory of Music. In a program produced by Gustavo Aguilar and N.B.Aldrich, I will be performing, along with fellow UMaine IMFA grad students and undergraduates from U of Maine, Farmington, four pieces Pauline Oliveros.
    The performance will take place in the Woodfords Church Sanctuary, 202 Woodford St., Portland, ME, 04103. The Saturday program is a long one; i believe we will be on at around 6pm.

  • February 24th (Friday) 4 PM, I will be performing a trio with Gustavo Aguilar (percussion, noisemakers) and N.B.Aldrich (electronics), as part of the Concert for Contemplation, in Solidarity with Anoush Moazzeni. This will be taking place at the AP/PE Space, IMRC Center, Stewart Commons, University of Maine Orono, ME 04469-5785. This month, instead of our regular format, each Duck will present a non-Duck project of their own. Jesse Collins is bringing in Variant State [trio], with Howard Martin (trombone) and Michael Rosenstein (amplified object) joining him. Angela Sawyer will present some solo music and some of her comerades from the comedy scene. I will be presenting Ancient Ludwigs: Polly Hanson: antique Ludwig snare, electronics and percussion, and myself on antique Ludwig bass drum, electronics, reeds and percussion (and possibly a keyboard).

  • June 29th (Sunday) 6 PM, I will be playing in a performance of John Cage’s Variations III organized by Opensound founders Lou Bunk and Tim Feeney. The goal is to gather as many performers as possible for this, hopefully around 100. The concert will be in memory of Lou Cohen. Co-presented by Opensound and Mobius, this event will be taking place at the Somerville Armory, 191 Highland Avenue, Suite 1-A, Somerville, MA.   • October 28th (Friday) 8 PM, with Dave Gross’s improvising large ensemble: Linda Aubrey, electronics, Mike Bullock, bass, James Coleman, theremin, David Gross, alto saxophone, Bhob Rainey, soprano saxophone and, from San Francisco, Ron Heglin, trombone. It all happens at The Nave Gallery at the Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church, 155 Powderhouse Boulevard, Somerville.
  • May 30th (Monday) 12 PM, I'll be performing Tom Plsek’s Collateral Damage Noted, a Memorial Day tribute to the Iraqi civillians killed in the Iraq war. A group of nearly 100 musicians will be performing this piece on the Boston City Hall Plaza, Boston MA, starting at noon.

  • September 20th (Saturday) 6 PM (approx.), with “The PSC” (i.e., “the Petersham Sound Collective”) an impromptu improvising large ensemble which arose from a party out at the Mamashoe World Headquarters farm in Petersham, Massachusetts. Included were Jeff Pooser, guitar, Matt Samolis, flute, Katt Hernandez, violin, Bhob Rainey, soprano saxophone, Vic Rawlings, banjo, Greg Kelley, trumpet, and lots of others.

       2001

  • May 19th (Saturday) 5 PM, performing with the Invisible Cities Group in “The Impossible Library”; musical score composed by David Miller. This was a large, installation-like performance in Forest Hills Cemetary, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. Included were approximately 40 performers including musicians, dancers, visual artists, and actors.
